http://www.tbrich.com/azbambi/foolhollow_apr09__.html It was Tax Day! What better way to “celebrate” than to take off on a camping trip? We arose to a windy morning in Tucson but that didn’t dampen our spirits to get going on our trip to Fool Hollow Lake State Park. We had really been looking forward to our annual spring jaunt to the Show Low area in the White Mountains. We typically go for a week in the spring and a week in the fall…usually in April and October. We used to catch their winter special rates of 7 nights for the price of 5, but they keep shortening the window for that deal, and these days it ends in March … and it’s still the dead of winter in Show Low in March! But we like going up when it’s quiet, avoiding the heavy Phoenix traffic during the summer season … so we continue to go, despite missing the bargain rates. (Look back at our 2007 and 2008 trips for previous adventures at Fool Hollow.) We left the driveway about 11:00 AM. It was windy but not too bad on the drive up. We took our regular route north out of Tucson through Oracle and Mammoth where we topped off the gas tank as usual, and on to Winkleman. But Route 77 between Winkleman and Globe has been closed since last fall for construction (blasting!!) between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM weekdays. We knew this, so we took a detour on Route 177 northwest from Winkleman to Superior, then east on Highway 60 to Globe. It turned out to be an interesting drive. This route takes you through Hayden, Kearny and Kelvin ... all small copper mining towns, as is Winkleman. The large pit mine you pass on this route is called the Ray Mine. You know it’s there because you see the man-made terraced hills of mine trailings. Then as you round a curve you see the pit itself dropping off the side of the road. Interestingly, they have “view points” where the public can get a better view of the pit. It’s pretty impressive … a deep (really deep) man-made hole in the ground with roads zig- zagging up and down the steep sides so the huge ore trucks can haul the ore up out of the pit. Of course, copper pit mining is a very important industry in Arizona, but alas, it does leave its own special tell-tale scar on the land. The trailing hills are not pretty. Wonder if they intend to fill the hole back up and re-landscape the countryside when the mine is exhausted. Probably not. The whole south-east-central part of Arizona is rich in copper, with several major mines, so it’s not an uncommon site. We find it interesting that the mining towns that dot the areas of copper mines always seem so depressed and run down. Of course, the current state of the economy doesn’t help, but it seems like it’s always been that way, even in better times. One has to wonder where the money made by the mines goes … it certainly doesn’t seem to be present or reflected in the mining towns where the miners live. Sad, really. At one point on the road to Superior (yet another mining town) there is a 10% grade (!) to a pass through the mountains. That’s one of the steeper grades we’ve towed on. At the crest of the steep summit, you suddenly get an odd feeling in your stomach because as you reach the crest between two sides of a mountain that has been carved away to make way for the road, all you can see are the sides of the mountain on either side and blue sky straight ahead … sort of like coming to the top of a roller coaster ride. It’s especially wierd if it’s unfamiliar territory. As you hit the crest, you have to take it for granted that there’s a road on the other side and not a sheer cliff to drive off! Suddenly you’re greeted by a 10% down-grade into a wide valley of beautiful desert and graceful stands of saguaro. While the ride up was a bit unnerving, the other side was unexpectedly pretty. We tried to remember if we had been on this particular road before and we decided we probably had been, but we had been drivinghe other direction … and it was years ago ... before we had a trailer in tow! We reached Superior, AZ, which is on Highway 60 east of Apache Junction and Metro Phoenix … then headed east toward Miami and Globe. The terrain is very interesting along this route. We enjoyed driving through Devil’s Canyon with its dramatic rugged outcrops of stone as we climbed in elevation. Unfortunately, just after Devil’s Canyon there was another patch of construction complete with a 30 minute dead-stop wait. They appear to be widening the road to four lanes. This makes sense because Route 60 is one of the major “exit routes” from Phoenix to the west-central areas of Arizona. It was kind of interesting to see cranes and caterpillars up on steep hillsides picking up huge boulders that had been blasted away from the mountain to make a way for the widened road … not a place we’d want to sit all day and wait for rocks to fall, frankly. Finally they let us go through to Miami following a guide car. Beyond Miami is Globe, which we drove though and picked up our regular route, Highway 60, on the east side of town. Then it was north to Show Low! This little side trip added an hour to our trip, but only about 17 extra miles to the regular 200 miles to Show Low (total = 217.1). This made for a longer than normal day. We were tired from the trip and the Girls were anxious to stretch their legs, too. Having arrived in Globe we still had the Salt River Canyon between Globe and Show Low to navigate. Some would call it a white knuckle experience towing a trailer, but we’ve been up and down the Salt Canyon switchbacks so many times that it’s routine for us anymore. It’s beautiful and every time we are struck with its drama. And it signals to us that we are almost to our destination in the mountains. We arrived at Fool Hollow at 4:15 PM. We had watched the temps drop steadily as we climbed into the mountains. When we got to Fool Hollow, it was cold — about 49 degrees — and quite windy. We learned later on TV that Show Low had had wind gusts of 75 mph that day. We were glad we hadn’t experienced that! That’s a big wind! We drove into the Red Head Loop and were pleased to find that our favorite site (#15) was open. We’ve stayed in that site at least 4 other times, if not more. We like it because it’s up the hill from the lake, away from what can be strong breezes that can come off the lake … yet it’s still within walking distance of he water… and it has a lot of privacy, looking out onto a hillside of lichen-covered boulders and open forest. We did a quick set up sans rug and chairs because of the wind, planning to complete that task when the weather got nicer … hopefully the next morning. There were only 5 campsites in Red Head Loop filled, but before we were even set up a couple stopped by and commented on the Bambi… “It’s handsome,” they said. We agreed, of course! It was going to be a nice camping trip, we could tell, despite the chilly weather. We bundled up and took the Girls for a quick walk, then we all huddled inside to get warm. We were both a little surprised that it was so cold, but the wind off the lake can chill you to the bone. We were prepared, however, armed with full propane tanks and our little electric ceramic heater, which we cranked up right away. And, knowing it would be a cool trip, we had outfitted the Bambi with the “Los Ojos Décor” with Cayenne accents which is based on a reversible Pendleton wool blanket as a bed spread. We wanted a quick and hot dinner. We decided on spaghetti which was a great choice. It really hit the spot. We even did dishes the first night instead of saving them until we had more to wash … it’s such a luxury having full hookups — including sewer — in a state park. By 9:30 PM it was 39 degrees out. The wind subsided in the evening, and we had a quiet but cold night … it got down to 26 degrees! Oh yes … gas prices. Just for the record, gas was $1.799 in Tucson, $1.869 in Mammoth, $1.899 in Globe, and $1.999 in Show Low. We got up Thursday to a chilly morning, but less wind. Terry took the Girls on their morning constitutional around Red Head Loop … there were only 3 sites occupied that morning. With below-freezing temps Wednesday night, the water hose had ice in it that morning (we have pictures to prove it). The electric ceramic heater got a workout that night, but it kept us all toasty warm. By noon Thursday it got up to 46 degrees ... a regular heat spell! Later we took a walk with the Girls up to the other loop that’s open, Mallard Loop. There were only two campsites and two camp host sites occupied. It was very deserted feeling … just the occasional drive-through by one of the few occupants or by the rangers. We enjoyed the solitude. Thursday the weather held pretty steady with no rain or wind, so Terry finished setting up campsite outside. About 4:00 PM the temperature had dropped to 42 degrees and we suddenly noticed we were having snow flurries! Yes, SNOW! It wasn’t heavy and didn’t stick, but SNOW nonetheless. We were excited because we have never been caught in a snowstorm with the Bambi. We knew the temps would be warming up the next week, so we didn’t have to worry about towing the trailer in bad weather. The snow stopped, but we weren’t sure what the night would bring … it was forecast to be even colder Thursday night … 25 degrees. The good news is that we put the unchilled wine and spicy V-8 juice outside so it could get cold! Who needs an ice chest in this weather?! With the weather chilly in the late afternoon, we pretty much stayed inside and stayed warm. Greg worked on an Airstream cushion slip cover job he had going … dinette and sofa seat cushions for a 25’ front bedroom. Greg sent them samples of potential fabrics … they selected a very nice faux leather in a rich camel color. They are going to look great! It had not snowed any more during the night ... it was not as cold and a little sun was peaking through. We took the opportunity to go into Show Low to hit our favorite thrift stores and look around to see what had changed since we were there last October. The bad economy is taking its toll on Show Low and surrounding areas, as it is everywhere, it appears … we noticed that several retail stores had closed ... a big box store parking lots didn’t seem as busy as normal. We returned to the park to anxious Girls ready to go for another walk. (They can be so predictable sometimes, but ever so cute.) Made pizza for dinner. Mmmm … This was something we had decided before the trip that we wanted to try, so we’d brought the fixin’s. It turned our pretty good, too, so we’ll definitely include pizza in our repertoire of future camping meals, which is steadily expanding. We are learning to be quite creative in our culinary adventures while on the road. The pizza hit the spot. Friday night it got down to 29 degrees … not quite as cold as before, but pretty darn chilly nonetheless. That last walk with the Girls about 10:00 PM was dang cold. Terry got all bundled up for the walk and the Girls did their business without dawdling as they sometimes can do … they wanted to get back to the warm Bambi, too … and curl up for the night. Saturday was sunny and warmer … We called Sandy & Paul, our friends who moved from Tucson to Overgaard several years back and built a great home. We arranged a lunch date for Sunday in Overgaard, which is about 30 miles west of Show Low on Route 260. That afternoon another Airstream came into the park ... the driver honked as they drove by while looking for a site to light in. We love seeing other Airstreams on the road! They ended up selecting a site in our loop on the opposite side directly across from us. We saw that there was only one person in the truck — a large box van pulling fairly large Airstream — so when he started to back into the site, Terry went over to offer help in getting him backed into the space wihtout hitting a tree. It was then that Terry discovered it was Michael Depraida (“Artstream” on the Airforums)! We had not met Michael in our travels, but were familiar with his travels from the Airforums. It was great to meet him. Michael is an artist and even has a line of Airstream art in addition to his fine art. We ended up sharing our charcoal grill with Michael that evening over cocktails, dinner and a bottle of Arizona wine at our campsite. It nice meeting him, and even more fun to get to know him a bit. He was on his way to the WBCCI 4 Corners Unit (the unit of the Airstream Club we belong to) Restoration Rally in Albuquerque after having spent four months in Anza-Borrego Desert in California. He is originally from New York and now full-times in his Airstream, creating his fine art and participating in art exhibits around the country. Interesting guy, needless to say. It wa a pleasure accidentally meeting up with him. It didn’t get below freezing Saturday night … just 35 — the first night above freezing since we arrived. We got up a little earlier than normal as Terry had to drive to the ranger station and pay for another block of 3 nights. Then we took the Girls on a walk and stopped by Michael’s site before we left for Overgaard to see Sandy & Paul. We bought three of his wonderful Airstream-inspired t-shirts and a small print of one of his pieces, that of an Airstream being pulled by a camel, commemorating the historic Capetown to Cairo Airstream caravan of years long passed. (Thanks, Michael!) We decided to use his print as inspiration for another décor that will have a Moroccan theme. This will be a fun one! (Stay tuned!) After visiting with Michael for a bit, we took off for Overgaard to meet Sandy & Paul. We got a tour of what they had done on their wonderful home since the last time we were there. It was great to see Sandy & Paul again … and their sweet Yellow Lab Annie, and their two kitties. Annie is getting up there in years, but she still seemed to remember us and was wagging and wiggling to say “hello.” Such a sweetie. We got back to Show Low about 4:00 PM … again, to our own anxious pups ready to go on their afternoon walk! We did lunch at Casa Ramos, a Mexican restaurant in Overgaard. (We recommend it!) Airstream friends, Kathy & Clint had recommended the place from a trip they took to Show Low earlier this year. It was very very good! We’ll be back, for sure. We dropped Sandy back at her home and said our goodbyes to her and Paul and headed back to Fool Hollow. We’ll see them again in 6 months when we return for our fall trip. It’s funny ... we see more of Sandy & Paul now that the live in Overgaard than we did when they lived in Tucson! Sandy and Terry worked together years ago at an ad agency, and they usually got together about once a year to celebrate thier birthdays. Now we see them at least twice a year! When we left the park earlier that day, Michael was not been sure if he was going to stay another night at Fool Hollow or move on toward the rally. His plan was to go to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s VLA (Very Large Array) of 27 radio antenna dishes between the Arizona border and Soccoro on Route 60 and then continue on his way to Albuquerque for the rally. The VLA is a surrealistic site in the New Mexico high desert between the Arizona/New Mexico state line and Soccoro, NM … The large grouping (ergo the name “VLA”) of huge radio antennas, are all aimed into space “listening” for whatever there is to “hear.” The VLA was popularized when it was the site of the opening scene of the science fiction movie “Contact,” if you remember that. We have driven past it before but never have stopped ... but the next time we go that way we are going to stop and pay it a visit, for sure. When we got back to Fool Hollow, Michael’s rig was gone, so he had decided to move on and get closer to the rally destination. Unfortunately, we did not get any pictures of Michael or his rig (which is something else). Next time we see him we will be sure to “document” our meeting for posterity! We had a light dinner that evning as we were still comfortable from our late lunch at Casa Ramos. The evening temps were very nice … and we looked forward to the rising temps and great weather that they were forecasting for the week. It only got down to 34 degrees Sunday night. Things were definitely warming up! We hung out around camp for the most of the day Monday. Greg worked on another slip cover at the picnic table and Terry had a layout to do for a client, so this was a “working day” at Fool Hollow. With our longer trips, this usually happens … but it’s great to be able to accomplish our responsibilities from a campground in the mountains instead of home when we want to … so we don’t mind spending part of our time working. It was a good day for it, because it was very quiet in the park with pleasant weather. A few new campers came in but there was really very little activity in our loop. We barely even saw the rangers that day! It was pleasant and very laid back ... perfect for a Monday. We cranked up the grill in the late afternoon and grilled burgers for dinner. That night the temps were even warmer…up to 37 degrees! Tuesday was the first day we put down the awnings to keep the sun off the sides of the Bambi. It’s amazing what a difference that makes. Greg finished the slip cover job he’d been working on. All that’s left to do is try the covers on actual cushions at Oasis RV in Tucson for a final fitting. If he’s happy with the fit, then he plans to finish the final stitching and they will be ready to go! It was easier working with the vinyl that day because it was warmer out … cold weather make the vinyl a bit stiff to work with we discovered. That evening we popped open a bottle of wine and had a nice dinner of grilled pork chops, greens and mashed potatoes. That night it was “warmer” yet … 41 degrees! Wednesday was our last full day at Fool Hollow… our “lazy day” before heading back to the desert. We got new neighbors in the afternoon and chatted with them … a pleasant couple from Show Low who were there for a shake-down trip after buying a small trailer. They had camping experience with a small pop-up but this was their first self-contained unit. We shared a few tips with them about some of the systems and checked out their rig. They wanted a tour of the Bambi, and we wer happy to ablige, of course. We paid for our last night in the park … came back to the Bambi and took the Girls for a long walk along the lakeshore between the campground and the boat ramp. The Girls really enjoy getting out into the “wild” and smelling the smells. There must have been some really good ones because they sniffed intensely at almost every turn of the trail. We had a relaxed afternoon and grilled brauts on the grill. In the aftertnoon Larry & Bill, Airstream friends from San Diego, called from their camping trip to California’s Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. There were staying at Palm Canyon Campground near Borrego Springs where we had met up with them and a few other Airstreamers on our 2008 Holiday Trip. They were having some very warm weather and were giving their AC a workout. They have not done a lot of warm-weather camping, so this was new for them, and the first time they had really made use of their air conditioner. The day before had been 102 degrees. (We later learned that the temps went down for them after the first few nights and they were able to be outside more without melting in the brutal desert heat.) When we’d been there over New Year’s the campground was 100% occupied … but they said there were only about 10 or 15 sites filled on this trip. Of course, the heat keeps folks away. We felt lucky that our temps were in the high 70s with pleasant nights … We learned it was 97 degrees that day in Tucson, so that made us feel good, too. Thursday morning we packed up camp after 8 nights, and departed for home. We gassed up on the way out of town and pulled out of the gas station at high noon. We had a 4-5 hour drive ahead of us. As usual, we headed south on Route 60 from Show Low, going through the Salt River Canyon once again, and on to Globe. Route 77 between Globe and Winkleman was still closed, so we headed west on Route 60 toward Superior, backtracking the route we’d brought up. However, rather than turning south to Winkleman at Superior we decided to remain on Highway 60 heading toward Phoenix and take Route 70 south through Florence to Tucson. Another pretty drive. We even went through a tunnel, which was interesting. On the east side of the tunnel the terrain was rugged and steep … then when we came out the other end of the tunnel on the west side of the mountain, we were in a completely different terrain consisting of rolling desert hills covered with saguaros and cholla cacti. The Florence Junction route is a familiar one for us as that is how we head north from Tucson when we head to areas north of Phoenix. This ended up being only about 4 miles longer than our usual route from Globe to Tucson … with better roads and fewer grades to climb, this may be the route we take back and forth to the White mountains and Show Low in the future. We also felt like it was a faster trip and we probably got better mileage because we climbed fewer mountains … so it was a pleasant surprise for us. It just goes to show that it’s good to break out of your routine once in a while and try something new! Unfortunately, we hit Tucson right at rush hour … about 4:15 PM and traffic was pretty heavy. In fact, we saw a lady going the opposite direction on Oracle Road rear-end a truck that had stopped for a school bus. It really crumpled her car. We think she was on a cell phone … we look forward to the day when being on the phone while driving is against the law, as it is in California. Seeing that accident take place put us on extra alert for the remainder of our trip across town to our house, for sure. We pulled in about 4:45 PM, parking across the street from our house. We always unload the Girls and “release” them into the back yard … they are always so appreciative to be outside off-leash after a trip. Annie in particular likes to roll around in her favorite places, as you’ll see in the pictures below. We got the Bambi put away within a few minutes, and began unloading the Bambi and truck. We have this down to a science so it takes us only about half an hour to be done with it. Then we can look around the yard to see what’s blooming and go through the pile of snail-mail that’s accumulated, and sometimes, if they are out, check in with our neighbors who watch over our place while we are gone. (Thank you Tony & Irma and Tony Jr.!) We had a warm spell in Tucson while we were gone, so we were greeted by lots of blooms in the yard … primrose, bougainvillea, and lantana … and of particular note was a wonderful showing of cactus blooms on one of the cacti in the front yard.
