Tuesday morning we pulled up our stakes, packed up
(enough to make the short move), bid our farewell to
Kartchner Caverns and hit the road for Roper Lake State Park about noon. We have been to Roper Lake many times over the past several years, and several times with the Airstream. So it was as if we were visiting an old friend. We got there about 2 pm just at checkout time, which was good timing. It was far busier than we thought it would be, being a Tuesday. In fact, there were only a few sites available in the loop we like to stay in, and within an hour it was filled up. We snagged a nice pull-through site facing west toward Mt. Graham and the marsh where much of the park’s bird activity is. We spoke to a neighbor as we were setting up camp…apparently the space had just been vacated when we pulled in…so timing was great!

When we first arrived we noticed quite a few rigs in the dry camping area…the next morning most of them had either left to go on their way or moved into vacated spaces in the electrical loops. The same thing happened the next day, and each day we were there spaces would open up during the day and then by
4 or 5 pm the place was full again…such a transient bunch of people we are!

We stayed in the campground the first day we arrived at Roper Lake…took a few nice walks with the Girls, and had a comfortable night’s rest. Internet reception was very good at Roper Lake…didn’t have to take the laptop out to the picnic table to get connected, and never got dropped.

Wednesday, we drove into Safford to gas up and visit an antique store we’d discovered the last time we were there. It’s a nice store, but we have yet to find
anything there we can’t live without…still fun to look. We also
went to the post office and stopped in a few resale stores (one of
Greg’s favorite pastimes)…nothing there either. We cranked
the grill up Wednesday night and had a nice steak dinner…
we hadn’t been able to use charcoal at Katchner and we
didn’t bring the gas grill with us on this trip, so this was our first chance to BBQ! Mmmm.
