Meandering in Southeastern Arizona...

friday they rested

And on Friday they rested...it’s hard work sight seeing and enjoying the road, afterall!

We had talked about heading home on Friday…a full

week after we’d left, but it seemed like we needed just

one more day to just do nothing but relax…so that’s what we did on Friday, plutting off leaving till Saturday. It was quite pleasant. It was very warm…in the high 70s! We took walks, enjoyed being out under the awning, and took more walks. All the while the park filled up to the brink for the weekend. Here, too, folks were driving around to look at campers’ tags to see when they were leaving. We were leaving on 1 March, but the ranger had gotten cute and put 2/30 on our tag…February 30th with a smiley face in the zero…which of course, doesn’t exist. That really confused folks. One guy actually stopped, got out of his car, and came closer to get a better look. He didn’t look amused. (One fun thing about the wrap-around windo at the front of the Bambi...we can see out, but in the daytime you can’t see in. Makes for good people watching.) It was nice to just enjoy the scenery, the yellow-headed black birds (which gathered ominously in the trees near our campsite each evening at dusk)….then swooped over to the edge of the lake. We think they followed us here from Patagoia Lake. We had a nice camp fire that last night even though it wasn’t all that chilly…

Saturday morning we packed up and headed back to Tucson…arriving home about 2:30 pm… It was a wonderful time of “meandering” even though we not

all that far from home.  We put about 750 miles on the truck but

only 270 miles on the Bambi… On the way home the

“Maintenance Needed” warning light in the truck went on—

just alerting us to the fact that we were due for our 10,000

mile service. We’ve had the truck one year as of 10 March, so

that’s 10,000  miles driven in the last year, with 4,700 of that

with the Bambi in tow. Not bad for our first year of Airstreaming … all of that in Arizona except our trip to the San Diego parks in May ’07.  We’re hoping for even greater numbers this year. We really like doing this! And now that we have internet capability on the road, well...well, you know.... (Can you say “Gone Campin’?”)

Oh!  Almost forgot…we saw 21 or 22 Airstreams on this trip…a pretty good number…but only about 6 or 7 were on the road or in campgrounds being used… most were sitting in yards or in a state of disrepair.  We were a couple of vehicles behind an Airstream on our way to Roper Lake…from I-10 north…we thought they, too, might be going to Roper, but they didn’t make the turn for Roper. But there were two others at Roper Lake when we got there…an older Excella and a fairly new 16’ Bambi…we didn’t have the chance to speak to any of the other Airstreamers, unfortunately.  A couple of folks stopped to comment while we were at Roper…Them: “Nice trailer!” Us: “Thank you!” … Them: “Do they still make those?” Us: “Yes, they do.” … Them: “Can we peek inside?” Us: “Sure…come on in!”
