http://www.tbrich.com/azbambi/roper_mar09_.html We had originally planned to celebrate a friend’s birthday the last weekend in March with a joint camping trip to Patagonia Lake State Park. Unfor- tunately, our friends encountered a family problem that made it necessary to cancel a few days before we were to depart. We were disappointed, of course, but we completely understood and we would have done the same thing ourselves under similar circumstances. “The best laid plans of mice .... “ We decided to still go camping, however — but to save Patagonia Lake for later when our friends would be able to go too. Instead, we decided to go to Roper Lake State Park … we had not been there since last fall. (You can visit previous trip logs to Roper by going to our trip list pages for 2007 and 2008. This will give you many more pictures of Roper and a peek at what it’s like there at other times of year.) You may remember our friend, Sandy, from our recent trips to Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, AZ for the Four Corners Unit Dead Horse 3 Rally which we combined with a trip Lake Pleasant. She had been spending some quality time in the Tucson area at various campgrounds (Gilbert Ray and Catalina State Park) visiting a couple of friends in the area — including us — off and on and having work done on her Airstream in Tucson. Sandy had decided to meander from Tucson east and north through New Mexico and Colorado so that she could visit an old friend in Colorado before heading home to Utah. We had recommended Roper Lake State Park as a stop over for that leg of her trip and she did just that! So she was headed in the same direction we were. We talked to Sandy shortly before we left home on Thursday about 11:30 AM. We learned that she had not left Tucson until late Wednesday, so she had stayed overnight in Benson, not too far east of Tucson on I-10 … and was headed to Roper Lake next. So it looked like we would see Sandy again this trip after all! Cool! We spoke again when she had arrived at Roper Lake and just as we were reaching Willcox, AZ, about 45 miles from Roper. She told us the park was pretty busy, and it looked like it was going to be completely filled before long. This didn’t surprise us because when Terry had called the park the day before they said they were unusually busy and had been filled every day by mid-afternoon lately. So we were prepared to dry camp our first night there if necessary, then move to an electrical site the next day as someone left. We pulled up to the ranger station about 1:30 PM. Knowing that check-out time is 2:00 PM, we were hoping that someone in one of the two electric loops was staying till the last minute! The volunteer at the ranger station said there was one site left in Hacienda Loop where we usually like to stay, but it was a site that has the curb side of the trailer facing the road … not the best logistics. But she also said that the folks in space #5 in Cottonwood Loop (the other electric loop) were going to leave by 2:00 PM. She just happened to know this because they had just stopped by the ranger station to borrow a phone, as their cell phone had konked out. So the volunteer sent us over to their site to see if they had left yet. She said, “Just go on in and when you figure out if you’re staying in the electric loop or the dry camping area, to come back and pay.” That was gracious of her ... we have been in state parks where this would not have been offered. So off we went to Cottonwood Loop, and sure enough the folks in site #5 were almost packed up. We parked along the road and Terry went to chat with them a minute. He explained that the lady at the ranger station had sent us over, and they said they would be leaving in about 15 minutes. Terry pulled a camping chair out of the trailer and asked them to leave our chair in the space if they left before we got back, to hold it for us. As we left Terry jokingly called back to the guy, “Now don’t you be taking off with our chair!!” He laughed and said we didn’t have to worry … they didn’t have room for it! We were glad we’d nabbed the site, even though it was not in the loop we preferred. Before the weekend was over, however, we were glad we were in this loop for a change because the sites in Cottonwood all have covered ramadas, and those in Hacienda don’t. While they were finishing packing, we drove up to Hacienda Loop where Sandy was located. We saw her outside her Airstream waving at us as we pulled into the loop. She was in a site on the western side of the loop near the rushes and cattails that stand along a creek separating Hacienda Loop from Cottonwood Loop … not that far from where we’d be. And there’s a path from one loop to the other, so it was just a short walk to go visiting. We could actually see our site-to-be from her site. We said our hellos and had a good laugh because we’d said our goodbyes earlier in the week when we last saw her in Tucson, not knowing that our plans would change and we’d end up camping in the same park again. We assured her that we weren’t stalking her, but that we were happy to see her and her Samoyeds, Cody and Tasha, again, nontheless. The dogs seemed happy to see us again, too. We didn’t want to dally too long, so we headed back to the Cottonwood loop planning to park in the street and wait for the folks to leave, but when we got there, they were gone, and there was out chair sitting right in the middle of the pad. So we were good. We backed into the site, got the trailer where we wanted it and began the tasks of unhitching and setting up camp. We got the Girls out of the truck and to the picnic table under the shelter to keep them away from the trailer while we unhitched. The site was situated so that the curb side of the trailer faced southeast. This gave us a fair amount of shade in the late afternoon … even more with the awning down. And the shelter gave us nice shade, too. We noted that the site was just three spaces from the site we stayed in the very first time we were at Roper Lake in our little motor home four years ago or so. The Cottonwood Loop is fairly flat, while the Hacienda Loop has some terracing, but it does have the shelters at each site and it faces the lake, which is nice. So all in all, it was good. We were pleased. Had fate not been on our side we would have ended up in the dry camping loop with no electricity until the next day … doable, for sure, but not preferable. Once settled in we took the Girls for a walk and to let them sniff their way around the loop. They both seemed to be completely at ease with the place … they had been here many times before, after all. The drive east bound on I-10 had been a bit windy that day, and thankfully from the rear. Then when we turned north onto Route 191 heading toward Safford (about 35 miles north of I-10) and were on the east side of Mt. Graham, the winds settled down a bit. However, the reprieve was short-lived. By 4 :00 PM on Thursday the wind was howling through the park. It was really brutal. We didn’t even think of deploying the awnings Thursday once we were settled. We connected with Sandy again, and planned to get together at our campsite for dinner … and when she came over she ooh’d and aah’d at the “Golden Zebra” décor that we had decided on for this trip. It’s such a nice tailored look! For dinner we had roast turkey breast that we’d cooked the day before, mashed potatoes and gravy with a nice salad … with peach pie for dessert! Mmmm … comfort food. All the while the wind was whipping around. Sandy took off to take Cody and Tasha for a walk and we called it an early night and took the Girls for their final loop-walk of the night. Once again, our main objective this trip was to relax and just be lazy ... and you know what? We are getting really good at that! Friday was still a bit windy, but not as bad as Thursday evening had been … we thought we were going to wake up in the next county! It even sprinkled that night about 10:00 PM …just when Terry took the Girls out for a walk before bed. It didn’t really rain … it just sprinkled enough to mess up the truck and the Bambi which, by that time, were covered with a fine layer of white dust from all the wind. It would have been better if it had rained hard enough to rinse off the dirt, at least! But nooooo. Oh, and we shouldn’t forget to mention that we always have a fabulous internet connection at Roper with the Alltel air card with Broadband Axcess, so Terry was able to stay in touch with clients and complete work on a couple of pending projects. In fact, several projects came up while we were out for the extended weekend … we’ve decided to the best way to conger up work is to take off on a trip! One client, in particular (you know who you are), seems to have a sixth sense about when we are planning a trip. Almost without fail, either the day before we leave or the day after, Terry hears from them with a request. That’s good, though, and with internet access, we never miss a beat! Friday was another day of a few sites emptying in the morning with new folks coming in to fill them up within the hour … unless a site was reserved for that night. Roper Lake is one of two Arizona state parks that is experimenting with reservations for campsites. (The other is Buckskin Mountain State Park on the Lower Colorado River north of Parker, AZ … see our trip there in Dec 2007.) Reservation information is available on the Roper Lake website. Not all sites are reservable, though — some are first come first served. The reserved dates for individual sites are shown at each site, so if you come in, and it’s not reserved for the night you arrive, you may take it, but you have to vacate for the reserved nights, of course. It’s set up a little differently at Buckskin Mountain ... at least it was the last time we were there. Friday evening we fired up the grill … Terry grilled a steak to share with Greg and Sandy brought over some lamb chops for her dinner. And a salad to share. The breeze calmed enough to have dinner outside that evening by candle light under the shelter, but we did come in for dessert. We finished off that peach pie! Saturday the weather was wonderful. No wind, and quite warm. And we had another very laid back day watching the world go by and the campers coming and going. We took walks with the Girls and hung out in the loop for most of the day. Sandy had decided to leave for New Mexico on Monday, so she spent most of the day taking care of business … gathering info for her taxes, laundry in town, cleaning, etc. She had been on the road for nearly 3 months by this time, so she wanted to “freshen” her surroundings for the next leg of her journey. Sunday was a little breezy again, but not too bad. We took the opportunity to drive into town and gas up … and we visited the Wal-Mart. We stumbled into the camping area and decided to buy a Coleman camping lantern that operates with a small propane canister. We’d been looking at them in different places, and finally decided this was the sort we wanted to try. So when we got back to the campsite, put on the mantles and got ready to test it that night. It worked great! We think we’ll be pleased with it. We cooked hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill using the new lantern on the picnic table and had a quiet dinner. We had said our goodbyes to Sandy on Sunday evening because she planned to leave early on Monday morning. And sure enough, when we got up Monday morning, her rig was gone. It was windy again, though, and we hoped that she didn’t have a tough time towing in it. We stayed close to camp that day, our last day in the park, as we had decided to head home Tuesday. That evening Sandy called to let us she had made it all the way to Albuquerque! Wow! That’s a very long day towing … 10 hours or so. We were impressed. And she did have a lot of wind as we suspected she might. She was tired, but had arrived safely and glad she’d just pushed on through. We were glad she called so we didn’t hve to worry about her. She planned to stay put for a while to rest and wait for weather further north to calm down before she headed on into Colorado. (There had been a big storm complete with snow rolling through Colorado a couple of days before.) We got up Tuesday morning and took our time getting the campsite packed away and ready to roll. We weren’t in any hurry. The weather was calm, and we were glad that we wouldn’t have to fight wind on the drive home. The park had closed down the dump staion over the weekend ... it was “full.” So we were prepared to drive into town after leaving the park to hit a free dump station there. But happily, they got it drained and redy for use before we left, so we got to avoid that little side trip! We deprted about 12:30 PM and had a pleasant and uneventful drive home ... just the kid we like! It was a good weekend — we felt rested and ready to plan our next trip. It’s funny how we always talk about where we want to go next as we are returning home from trips. We don’t want moss to grow, you know!
